Adopting from China
At-A-Glance
Who can adopt from China?
 | Married couples accepted. Must have been married for at least two
years. If either parent has been previously divorced, current marriage
must be at least 5 years. Each parent cannot have more than two
divorces. |
 |
Minimum household income: $10,000 per household member and minimum net
worth of $80,000. |
 | All adopting parents must be at least 30 years of age and under
50 years of age at the time of submission of their dossier. Generally,
one parent must be 30-45 to adopt an infant. |
 | All adopting parents must be in good health physically, mentally
and emotionally with a Body Mass Index below 40. |
 |
Adopting family cannot have more than four children already in the home. |
 | Any criminal history will be closely reviewed on a case-by-case
basis. |
Children available for adoption
 | Healthy infants 6 to 14 months at referral through
fourteen years of age. |
 | Older children and children with special needs
available. |
 | Children are either in orphanage or foster care home.

Process
 | Apply to The Barker Foundation |
 | Complete pre-adoption group and home study |
 | Complete dossier for China (Barker takes care of all
the steps of authentication, including through the Chinese Embassy) |
 | Authenticated dossier sent to the China Center of
Adoption Affairs (CCAA) |
 | Referral currently received average of 22 months
after dossier submitted to CCAA |
 | Family travels to China approximately 8 weeks after
accepting referral; stay in China an average of 2 weeks |
 | Adoption decree issued; birth certificate and Chinese
passport issued in provincial capital of child's current residence |
 | Family travels to US Consulate in Guangzhou for exit
interview, and to obtain visa for baby to enter the US |
 | Welcome your child into your home and begin 6 month
post-placement supervision period (China also requires a 12 month
report) |
 | Child receives automatic US Citizenship upon entry to
United States provided both parents travel |
 | Finalization in the US required when only one parent
travels; strongly recommended when both parents travel |
