Adopting from China

At-A-Glance

Who can adopt from China?

bulletMarried couples accepted. Must have been married for at least two years. If either parent has been previously divorced, current marriage must be at least 5 years. Each parent cannot have more than two divorces.
bullet Minimum household income: $10,000 per household member and minimum net worth of $80,000.
bulletAll adopting parents must be at least 30 years of age and under 50 years of age at the time of submission of their dossier. Generally, one parent must be 30-45 to adopt an infant.
bulletAll adopting parents must be in good health physically, mentally and emotionally with a Body Mass Index below 40.
bullet Adopting family cannot have more than four children already in the home.
bulletAny criminal history will be closely reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Children available for adoption

bulletHealthy infants 6 to 14 months at referral through fourteen years of age.
bulletOlder children and children with special needs available.
bulletChildren are either in orphanage or foster care home.
 

Process

bulletApply to The Barker Foundation
bulletComplete pre-adoption group and home study
bulletComplete dossier for China (Barker takes care of all the steps of authentication, including through the Chinese Embassy)
bulletAuthenticated dossier sent to the China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA)
bulletReferral currently received average of 22 months after dossier submitted to CCAA
bulletFamily travels to China approximately 8 weeks after accepting referral; stay in China an average of 2 weeks
bulletAdoption decree issued; birth certificate and Chinese passport issued in provincial capital of child's current residence
bulletFamily travels to US Consulate in Guangzhou for exit interview, and to obtain visa for baby to enter the US
bulletWelcome your child into your home and begin 6 month post-placement supervision period (China also requires a 12 month report)
bulletChild receives automatic US Citizenship upon entry to United States provided both parents travel
bulletFinalization in the US required when only one parent travels; strongly recommended when both parents travel
