Adopting from Colombia
At-A-Glance
Who can adopt from Colombia?
 | Couples married for at least 2 ˝ years. |
 | All adoptive parents must be at least 25 years old.
Parents cannot be older than 38 to adopt a child 0-3 years old. |
 | Adopting family can not have more than one child
already in the home. |
Children available for adoption
 | Healthy Infants 2- 4 months of age at time of
referral |
 | Parents are required to be flexible when expressing
gender preference of the child.

Process
 | Apply to The Barker Foundation
|
 | Complete pre-adoption group and home study
|
 | Adoptive parents complete a psychological evaluation
as required by Colombia
|
 | Dossier completed (Barker handles authentication
steps) and sent to Colombia and
Barker receives notification from Colombia of family's acceptance on
behalf of the family
|
 | Referral received 16-18 months after dossier
submission. For families where one spouse holds a Colombian passport,
referral of child might be expedited.
|
 | Both adoptive parents must travel to Bogotá 1-2 weeks
after referral and remain in the country for the 7-10 days; one parent
must remain in Colombia an average of 3 additional weeks to complete the
court proceedings )
|
 | Adoption decree issued; new birth certificate and
Colombian passport issued
Family goes to US Embassy in Bogotá for exit interview, and to obtain
visa for baby to enter the US
|
 | Welcome your child into your home and begin 6 month
post-placement supervision period
|
 | Baby receives automatic US Citizenship upon entry to
United States
|
 | Finalization in the US strongly recommended |
Other information about Barker's Colombia program
 | Since 2006, Barker has been licensed by Bienestar as
“Fundacion Barker.” This allows Barker to have a direct program in
Colombia.

 | We began working with Colombia in 1978

 | We have Spanish-speaking staff on our Barker
International team, to help with translation of documents from Colombia
|
 | English-speaking guides in Colombia to help families
navigate through the system there
|
 | Families stay in residences while in Bogotá (similar
to Bed & Breakfast); stay with other adopting families
|
 | Children generally 2 months old on average at time of
placement
|
 | Family can travel to several places within Colombia
while waiting for adoption to be completed (travel by air, not car)

 | Active support group for families adopting from
FANA (Friends of FANA DC) -
hold regular cultural and educational events for families and children |
