Adopting from El Salvador

At-A-Glance

Who can adopt from El Salvador?

bulletMarried couples, 25-45 years of age (the older parent cannot be more than 45 years older than the child)
bulletSingle women
bulletFamilies with children already in the home
bulletPrior marriages OK

Children available for adoption

bulletInfants up to 4 months of age at time of referral (up to 1 yr. at placement)
bulletPlacing biological siblings
bulletInfants in private foster care while waiting for placement; older children may be in orphanages
Either gender, families may specify gender

Process

bulletApply to The Barker Foundation
bulletComplete pre-adoption group, homestudy
bulletComplete dossier (Barker takes care of all steps of authentication)
bulletDossier sent to El Salvador
bulletReferral comes, usually within 12 months of submission of dossier
bulletSalvadoran court process (takes approximately 8 months)
bulletAdoption decree issued; new birth certificate and Salvadoran passport issued
bulletFamily travels to San Salvador for short stay to pick up baby, returns to US
bulletFollowing 6 month post-placement period, family readopts in the US
bulletBaby receives US Citizenship following completion of readoption process

bulletWe have Spanish-speaking staff on our Barker International team, to translate documents going between the US and El Salvador
bulletEnglish-speaking guides in El Salvador to help families navigate through the system there
bulletFamilies receive regular medical updates on the baby after referral, as well as periodic photo updates
bulletAverage processing time from initial application to placement 12 months
