Adopting from Taiwan

At-A-Glance

Who can adopt from Taiwan?

bulletMarried couples, 30-45 years of age
bulletCouples must be married 5 years or more
bulletFamilies with children already in the home eligible

Children available for adoption

bulletChildren range in age from a few months old, up to ten or twelve years old
bulletChildren in orphanages; some may have been in foster care for a period of time

Process

bulletApply to The Barker Foundation
bulletComplete pre-adoption group, home study
bulletHomestudy and photo album sent to orphanage in Taipei
bulletPhoto album reviewed by birthmothers working with Taiwanese agency; family selected by birthmother (because of this, it is very difficult to estimate the waiting time)
bulletOnce family is selected, other documentation completed, authenticated (by Barker), and sent to Taiwan
bulletProcessing time of approximately six months; documents go through both a lower and upper court before adoption decree is granted
bulletAdoption decree granted; family travels to Taipei to bring child home (stay in Taipei is relatively short, and only one parent has to travel, although we encourage both parents to go)
bulletChild arrives home; begin 6 month post-placement period
bulletFinalize adoption in the U.S. following post-placement (final decree given in Taiwan, but readoption required by U.S., as parents have not seen child prior to finalization in Taiwan)
bulletChild becomes U.S. citizen following finalization of adoption in U.S.
