Adoption of African American and Multiracial Children Program

Approximately half of the babies placed through Barker's Domestic Adoption Program are children of color. Because there are generally more minority infants available for adoption and fewer applicants of color, chances are the placement will occur more quickly when an adoption involves an African American or multiracial child.

While non-minority parents are considered for placement of minority children, applicants should be aware that this type of adoption -- called transracial adoption -- is often a more complex, lifelong process for both the parents and the child. For this reason we encourage adopting families to take advantage of special educational and social events which provide additional support for families adopting across racial lines.

Most aspects of the African American and multiracial adoption program are identical to the Domestic Comprehensive Program. Birth parent counseling, foster care, post-adoption, and lifelong services are offered to all families adopting though this program.

Families of color and those considering transracial placement are encouraged to contact us.
