Education Barker has long been a leader in adoption education. Since its establishment in 1945, we have emphasized the importance of educating adoptive parents, and more recently birth parents and adoptees. In addition to periodic educational sessions on particular topics (see our events calendar), Barker presents annual day-long conferences featuring speakers respected in the field of adoption for their knowledge of the subject and their ability to transmit information in a thoughtful and helpful way. Audiotapes of previous conferences can be purchased through A.V.E.R. Associates (410) 796-8940, FAX (410) 796-8962 or e-mail avertape@aol.com. A full description of sessions is available. 1996 - The Unexpected Journey: Learning and Attention Difficulties and Adoption, featuring experts in the fields of psychology, adoption, development pediatrics, and education. 1997 - The International Adoption Experience: Bridging the Difference, Making the Connections, featuring Joyce Pavao and Robin Allen. 1998 - Open Minds, Open Hearts: New Research on Issues of Openness for All Adoptive Families, featuring Dr. David Brodzinsky and Dr. Ruth McRoy. 1999 - Adoption and Adolescence: When Two Powerful Forces in a Child's Life Come Together, featuring Debra Johnson, Dr. Bruce Pfeffer, and Dr. Mary O'Leary Wiley. 2000 - Talking about the Tough Topics with your Adopted Adolescent: A How-to Workshop on Issues Adoptive Parents Want to Know about Most, featuring Patricia Irwin Johnston. 2001 - Our Connected Lives: A Conference for Birth
