Who can adopt from Ethiopia
- Couples married for at least 2 years and single women
- Adopting parents must be between the ages of 25 and 50 to adopt a child of any age; Adopting parents over the age of 50 are eligible to adopt children 4 years of age and older.
Children available for adoption
- Healthy infants from newborn to 12 months old at time of referral
- Toddlers, older children and sibling groups
- The majority of children are relinquished for adoption by the birth mother.
- Ethiopia strongly encourages that the adoptive parents meet the birth mother.
Process
- Apply to The Barker Foundation and Wide Horizons for Children
- Complete pre-adoption group, on-line training and home study
- Work with Wide Horizons to complete dossier
- Dossier is submitted to Ethiopia via Wide Horizons
- Referral of a child between newborn and 18 months of age is received 14 to 24 months after the dossier is submitted; for a child over 18 months of age, the referral is received 6 to 12 months after the dossier is submitted to Ethiopia.
- Parents may travel in 2 to 3 months once they accept the referral.
- Parents remain in Ethiopia for approximately one week
- Adoption of child is finalized in Ethiopia.
- Re-adoption of your child in the U.S. and then the child becomes a U.S. citizen.
- Welcome your child into your home and begin 6-month post-placement supervision period.
