This is a pilot program. The Nepali government re-opened their international adoption program at the beginning of 2009. Procedures and time frames provided here are strictly estimated.
Who can adopt from Nepal
- Couples married for at least 4 years and single women.
- Adopting parents must be between the ages of 30 and 55.
- Adopting parents over the age of 45 may need to prepare to adopt a toddler or older child.
- Families with no children can adopt a child of either gender. Families with one child must adopt a child of opposite gender.
Children available for adoption
- Healthy infants from 10 months and older at time of referral through 15 years of age.
Process
- Apply to The Barker Foundation
- Complete pre-adoption group, on-line training and home study
- Dossier completed (Barker handles authentication)
- Dossier is submitted to Nepal - Central Authority: Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare
- Referral of a child is received 6 to 12 months after Barker receives your dossier.
- Family travels in approximately 4 to 6 months after acceptance of referral.
- Parents remain in Nepal for approximately two weeks
- Adoption of child is finalized in Nepal.
- At the time of arrival homes, your child is automatically a U.S. citizen if both parents have traveled.
- Welcome your child into your home and begin 6-month post-placement supervision period.
