For Adopted Children and Teens
Activities for Adopted Children and Teens
At Barker, we provide several opportunities for school-age children to participate in activities where they can meet other adopted children.
Our Kids Groups are held several times a year.
These workshops are divided into a group for children in grades kindergarten to second grade and a group for children in grades 3 to 5, and are facilitated by a Barker social worker. The group provides a safe, supportive and fun environment in which the children can express their feelings about adoption, ask questions, learn how to talk about adoption in a way they are comfortable and share their own adoption stories. The activities are structured and include games, coloring and crafts in addition to age-appropriate discussions on different issues related to adoption. Parents meet concurrently for a portion of the time to hear about the topics that have been discussed with the children.
For teenagers in grades 9 through 12, Barker offers a Teen Weekend every spring at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Save the Date: Teen Weekend 2010: April 17 & 18, 2010
The program includes both indoor and outdoor activities, an opportunity to share experiences with other teens who were adopted and discussion groups facilitated by adoption professionals who were also adopted.
Other activities for children of all ages include Barker’s annual picnic, informal family gatherings and cultural activities.
