Adoptive Parents

The staff at The Barker Foundation is available to parents to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child’s development and behavior.

It is not uncommon for parents to wonder if a particular behavior is related to an adoption issue or if it is typical for a child at that age or stage of development. We are here to provide families with the support and information they need to advocate for their children at all times in their lives.

For many families, the relationship with Barker becomes an integral part of their life.

Knowing other families built through adoption can be important for both parents and children. The agency provides a variety of opportunities for families to establish friendships and to share experiences.

Activities for families begin as soon as the parents bring their child home. We have the New Parent Group which offers new parents the opportunity to meet other new adoptive families and to discuss parenting and adoption issues. Other social activities include Barker’s annual picnic, family outings and cultural celebrations.

In addition to our annual conference, Barker also offers a variety of post-adoption workshops on adoption related topics such as telling the adoption story to your child, creating a life book for your child, and handling the challenges that come with on-going communication with your child’s birth parents.

Sometimes, families consult with our experienced social workers about issues that arise for adoptive families. Individual counseling is available on a fee for service basis for adoptive parents. Barker also offers an on-going support group, Parents of Adolescents Discussion Group that meets monthly.
